🚨 Severity: HIGH
💡 Vulnerability: Unsanitized input from backend tracker descriptions could be injected via dangerouslySetInnerHTML.
🎯 Impact: This could result in a Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability.
🔧 Fix: We used isomorphic-dompurify to securely sanitize HTML without breaking Astro's SSR hydration.
✅ Verification: Ensure the app builds without errors and DOMPurify.sanitize properly prevents script injection into DescriptionPreview.tsx. Tests pass successfully.

Summary of Changes

Hello, I'm Gemini Code Assist1! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!

This pull request introduces a critical security enhancement by mitigating a high-severity XSS vulnerability. It ensures that user-generated content displayed on the frontend is properly sanitized, preventing malicious script injection and safeguarding the application's integrity and user data. The solution chosen is robust, supporting both server-side and client-side rendering environments.

Highlights

  • XSS Vulnerability Fix: Addressed a high-severity Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability where unsanitized backend tracker descriptions could be injected via dangerouslySetInnerHTML in Astro SSR.
  • HTML Sanitization with isomorphic-dompurify: Implemented isomorphic-dompurify to securely sanitize HTML content, ensuring compatibility with Astro's Server-Side Rendering (SSR) hydration process without causing mismatches.
  • Dependency Updates: Updated package.json and package-lock.json to include isomorphic-dompurify and refresh other dependency versions.

🧠 New Feature in Public Preview: You can now enable Memory to help Gemini Code Assist learn from your team's feedback. This makes future code reviews more consistent and personalized to your project's style. Click here to enable Memory in your admin console.

Changelog

Code Review

This pull request effectively addresses a high-severity Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability by integrating isomorphic-dompurify to sanitize HTML content before it is rendered using dangerouslySetInnerHTML. The changes correctly introduce the necessary dependency and apply the sanitization logic to both direct HTML input and HTML converted from BBCode, ensuring secure rendering in Astro's SSR environment. The addition of a sentinel.md file is also a good practice for documenting security fixes.

function sanitizePreviewHtml(html: string): string {
return html.replace(/\{\}/g, '');
// Use isomorphic-dompurify for Astro SSR compatibility
return DOMPurify.sanitize(html.replace(/\{\}/g, ''));

critical

The integration of DOMPurify.sanitize is a critical step to prevent Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities. Applying it to the HTML output, whether directly provided or converted from BBCode, ensures that potentially malicious content is neutralized before being rendered. This directly addresses the vulnerability described in the pull request.
