Summary

  • CLI: Add proxy support, verify --html one-shot mode, login --stdin for non-interactive auth, and form-encoded POST callback with HTML responses
  • Client: Add custom fetch option to DeepCitation client constructor
  • Refactor: Rename markdown/ module to formatting/ (better reflects scope: indicators + superscript, not just markdown)
  • CDN: Add zero-specificity trigger styles (hover, active, dark mode, reduced motion), multi-line trigger positioning via getClientRects(), and align status indicator icons with vertical-align: text-bottom
  • Docs: Add Claude Code skill install instructions, remove internal brand iteration doc

Test plan

  • bun run test — unit tests pass (includes new CLI verify HTML and auth tests)
  • npm run build — builds cleanly with renamed formatting module
  • npm run lint — no new lint issues
  • Verify CDN trigger hover/active styles in examples/static-html/
  • Verify dark mode trigger styles respect data-dc-theme attribute
  • Verify popover anchors to last line rect for multi-line triggers
  • Verify deepcitation verify --html <url> produces HTML output

refactor: rename markdown/ → formatting/ module

The markdown/ directory only contained indicator/formatting utilities, not
markdown rendering. Rename to formatting/ to better reflect its purpose.
Updates all imports across rendering, tests, and the public index.

feat: add custom fetch option to DeepCitation client

Allow consumers to inject a custom fetch implementation via
DeepCitationConfig.fetch, enabling proxy support and custom TLS
settings. Threaded through fetchWithRetry so retries use the same
transport.

feat: auth callback supports form-encoded POST with HTML responses

The login callback server now accepts application/x-www-form-urlencoded
POST in addition to JSON, returning styled HTML success/error pages.
This enables browser redirect flows where the dashboard POSTs credentials
directly. Also adds Access-Control-Allow-Private-Network for Chrome's
private network access preflight and keeps the server alive until the
callback is received (removes premature server.unref()).

Major CLI enhancements:
- Proxy support: auto-detects HTTPS_PROXY/HTTP_PROXY and tunnels
  requests through HTTP CONNECT, with NO_PROXY exclusions
- verify --html: one-shot pipeline that parses marked HTML with
  <<<CITATION_DATA>>> blocks, generates citation keys, verifies
  against the API, and injects the popover runtime
- verify --prompt: prints the citation format spec for LLM consumption
- login --stdin: read API key from stdin (avoids shell history exposure)
- status command: exit 0/1 for scripting auth checks
- cite alias for verify --html
- Removed maskKey from CLI output (credentials no longer echoed)
- Network errors now include proxy diagnostics

  instead of deleted src/markdown/ paths
- Sanitize HTTP method in proxy request line (strip CRLF)
- Guard decodeChunked against NaN chunk sizes
- Destroy TLS socket after proxy response to prevent resource leak
- Constrain [N] marker stripping to known citation IDs only, avoiding
  false positives on legitimate numeric brackets like [42]
- Update tests to match targeted stripping behavior

Add zero-specificity trigger styles (:where() selectors) for hover, active,
and dark mode so CDN triggers match the React text variant without requiring
host-page CSS. Use getClientRects() to anchor popovers to the last line of
multi-line inline triggers. Align status indicator icons with vertical-align:
text-bottom and remove redundant inline cursor style (now handled by CSS).

The response body is converted to a UTF-8 string unconditionally:

This header was added to every CORS response from the callback server. The Private Network Access spec is designed for resources explicitly serving private-network clients — adding it broadly could allow web pages on the public internet to make credentialed requests to this localhost server without additional browser prompts. If this is needed, it should only be sent in response to a Access-Control-Request-Private-Network: true preflight rather than unconditionally.

🟡 No timeout on proxy TLS socket

File: src/cli.ts — createProxyFetch

If the proxy is unreachable or stalls, the TLS socket (tlsConnect(...)) has no timeout. The CLI will hang indefinitely. Suggest adding tlsSocket.setTimeout(30_000, () => tlsSocket.destroy()) after the secureConnect event resolves.

🟡 createRequire path for --prompt is fragile in monorepo/workspace setups

File: src/auth.ts — startCallbackServer

Removing server.unref() means the Node process will now stay alive until the callback server is explicitly closed. The comment explains the reasoning well and this looks correct — previously, without server.unref(), a race could cause the process to exit before the OAuth callback arrived. The fix is good; just confirming it's intentional and not a regression.

Minor nit

src/__tests__/auth.test.ts — the "rejects form-encoded POST with wrong nonce" test asserts res.status === 200, which is correct (the error page returns HTTP 200 for UX reasons), but a brief comment in the test would clarify why 200 is expected on failure so it doesn't look like a test bug to future readers.

Summary: The proxy binary-encoding issue is the most important fix before merge — all other items are medium/low priority. The formatting/ rename and CDN trigger-style additions are clean and ready to go.

3. DC_LOGIN_URL override with no guard (src/cli.ts)

Anyone who can influence process.env (e.g. a malicious .env loader or npm lifecycle script) can redirect the OAuth browser open to an arbitrary URL. If this is intentionally for testing, add a comment and consider restricting it to NODE_ENV !== "production", or at minimum validate it starts with https://deepcitation.com.

Correctness

4. createProxyFetch has no connection timeout

The CONNECT handshake and TLS upgrade have no timeout. If the proxy is unreachable or slow, the CLI will hang indefinitely. Consider wrapping the socket promise with a timeout:

When multiple attachments both have id-less citations, the index reflects total citations across all attachments rather than the position within the current attachment. This makes the fallback key non-deterministic across different input orderings. Consider tracking a per-attachment counter instead.

6. verify() parses args, then re-parses in verifyHtml() — double parseArgs call is harmless but slightly wasteful. Could pass the already-parsed args object in.

7. whoami removed the API key from output — intentional privacy improvement, but this is a visible UX change. The PR description doesn't mention it and it may surprise users who relied on whoami to retrieve their key. Consider adding a note in the commit or keeping a deepcitation env pointer in the whoami output.

8. Access-Control-Allow-Private-Network: true is a good addition for Chrome's Private Network Access policy. Worth a brief doc note since it's a non-obvious header.

fix: cite alias missing --html flag, --prompt path resolution

- cite command now prepends --html to args so it correctly dispatches
  to verifyHtml instead of failing with missing --html/--citations
- Use require.resolve("deepcitation/package.json") instead of going
  up from the main entry, which landed in dist/ not the package root
