Welcome to the pedia wiki!

See the Index page for links to all the different categories in the Pedia. Each category (units, wonders, etc.) contains links to articles that have been written. If a page doesn't have a link, that means it's free to be written -- feel free to fill it in!

What is needed

Ultimately, we need freely usable (original, public domain, fair use, or otherwise non-copyrighted) content to replace all non-trivial game text and any other text that we wish to add.

The biggest needs are:

  • Pedia entries
  • Diplomacy text
  • Advisor commentary, including tech blurbs

Some additional nice to have text:

  • Tech/wonder quotes
  • Explanatory notes eg. for a tutorial mode
  • Expanded city & leader lists
  • Introductory message, perhaps per civ

How to contribute

Pages can be edited directly on this wiki if you have access (requires a GitHub account). Please make one page per pedia entry, or otherwise clearly organize the page with headers for smaller topics like quotes. Anyone else can collaborate on the shared Google doc found in Discord, and an editor will migrate content to here.

Expectations

Try to make all content to roughly similar length or no longer than the originals. Keep it family friendly.

Pedia entries

In general and when in doubt, follow the format of the Civ3 Civilopedia (contents found in Text/Civilopedia.txt). Most entries consist of 2 main parts: the summary of information relevant to the game (at the top of the default page) if any, and the longer more encyclopedic description page. You do not need to write out the generated sections like unit stats, only the parts written out in the text file. Skip the Game Concepts category for now, as these may be reorganized.

The summary should be a brief paragraph or two, maybe a bullet list, depending on the entry type, explaining just what the player needs to know. In many cases this will just be rephrasing the original text, but it may be helpful to present more structured details and save the prose for the description page: for examples of this, see the mod 2021 EXPANSION

For the most part, use a factual neutral tone with occasional levity or 'easter egg' type references. Make it digestible and interesting for players as young as middle school. It's not a history textbook.

Tech/wonder quotes

Keep them brief, relevant, mostly serious, and with a citation if possible. Feel free to submit multiple for consideration.

See https://civquotes.com/ for reference to the later games, which are fine to reuse.

Diplomacy script

There's quite a bit of flexibility here for personality and humor. Limit messages to a sentence or two, say 50 words.
