<p>Hi :) I'm Xiaowei R. Wang. I make work that centers around community empowerment, technology and ecology. My work is driven by a deep seated belief in the political power of being present, in dissolving the universal and categorical. What keeps me up at night: what it means to live in an age of technological anxiety.</p>
<p>I try to <a href="https://americanartsincubator.org/exchanges/mongolia" target="_blank">cultivate and nourish community</a>, <a href="http://www.headlands.org/artist/xiaowei-wang/" target="_blank">make public art,</a>, <a href="https://github.com/xrwang/textanalysis" target="_blank">data visualization</a> and hold <a href="https://www.fastcompany.com/1680158/these-beautiful-smart-kites-detect-air-pollution" target="_blank">community art workshops</a>. I believe in the constantly collaborative process of research, design and knowledge building. Occasionally I make objects, but Douglas Huebler's words reasonate for me in "The world is full of objects, more or less interesting; I do not wish to add any more."</p>
<p><b>Recently/past few years:</b>
Steward on <a href="https://collectiveaction.school" target="_blank">Collective Action School (fka Logic School)</a>, a grassroots, community driven organizing school for tech workers. Gave a <a href="https://www.ted.com/talks/xiaowei_r_wang_why_entrepreneurship_flourishes_in_the_countryside" target="_blank">TED talk on rural innovation</a> (with more than 1.7 million views!). Published <a href="https://www.fsgoriginals.com/books/blockchain-chicken-farm" target="_blank">Blockchain Chicken Farm</a> (read a New York Times review of the book <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/15/books/review/blockchain-chicken-farm-xiaowei-wang.html" target="_blank">here</a>), received my PhD at UC Berkeley, wrote a piece for Carrie Hott's solar powered internet server project, released the <a href="https://xrw.craft.me/semiconductorfieldguide" target="_blank">Semiconductor Field Guide</a>, worked on An Archive of Witch Fever (with the support of University of Washington DXArts Softlab & <a href ="https://eyebeam.org/meet-the-2024-artists/" target="_blank">Eyebeam</a>), on view at the <a href="https://www.bmoca.org/2025/medialive-data-rich-dirt-poor" target="_blank">Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art.</a></p>
<!-- serve as the Creative Director at <a href="http://logicmag.io" target="_blank">Logic Magazine</a>, finished a web residency at <a href="https://schloss-post.com/shanzhai-poetry-and-bypassing-censorship/" target="_blank">Akademie Schloss Solitude/ZKM</a>, thinking through the fabulous work of Sylvia Wynter for an <a href="http://bufubyusforus.com/thewyfyschool" target="_blank">online class at BUFU's WYFY school</a> -->
<p>Previously, I've worked at <a href="http://mapbox.com" target="_blank">Mapbox</a> as a software engineer, <a href="http://meedan.com" target="_blank">Meedan</a>, and <a href="http://situresearch.com" target="_blank">Situ Research</a> as a designer. I am currently a Mancosh Pathways to the Professoriate Postdoctoral Fellow at Northwestern University in the School of Communication. I hold a PhD from UC Berkeley and a BA from Harvard University.</p>
<p>Some of the prior projects I've worked on have been a finalist for the <a href="http://designtoimprovelife.dk/float-beijing/" target="_blank">INDEX Design Awards</a>, featured on <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/04/tech/innovation/kite-detects-pollution-beijing/" target="_blank">CNN</a>, <a href="http://tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/09/26/beijing-design-week-design-hop-program/?_r=1" target="_blank">NYTimes</a>, <a href="http://www.methodquarterly.com/2015/06/" target="_blank">Method Science Quarterly</a>, <a href="https://news.vice.com/article/why-have-us-drones-targeted-so-many-houses-in-pakistan" target="_blank">VICE Magazine</a>, <a href="https://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/06/03/microsampling-air-pollution/?mtrref=query.nytimes.com">NYTimes</a>, <a href="http://spectrum.ieee.org/tech-talk/at-work/test-and-measurement/pollution-sensing-kites-to-fly-in-beijing-skies" target="_blank">IEEE Spectrum</a>,<a href="http://www.harvarddesignmagazine.org/issues/39/ocean-sensing" target="_blank">Harvard Design Magazine </a> and the <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-19355949" target="_blank">BBC</a>. Or, watch me ramble about the type of things I'm interested in like the <a href="https://www.internetagemedia.com/tqoa" target="_blank">future(s) of the internet(s) for IAM@Tate Exchange</a>, talking about neoliberalism, China, the internet and economics speaking at the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waIpBBWM0L4" target="_blank">Asian Art Museum</a> and babbling about citizenship, protest and kites on <a href="http://edition.cnn.com/videos/world/2013/08/14/spc-index-float-beijing-vignette.cnn" target="_blank">CNN</a>. I've been fortunate enough to be in residency at places like Headlands Center for the Arts to work on a <a href="http://www.methodquarterly.com/2015/06/lux-meridiani/" target="_blank">speculative fiction about invasive species</a>, Kilpisjärvi Biological Station in Finland, and travel to Mongolia as a ZERO1/US Department of State AAI artist. </p>
