Docker in docker usage with /var/run/docker.sock

I'm running node-red from docker, so I'd like to volume mount /var/run/docker.sock to access the host docker environment but the params for the docker input node only take the host/port.

I'd like to request the option to set a socket path instead please.

That's a very good thing to bring up, I'm used to running it outside of docker and on windows, so hadn't thought of that.

I'll see what I can do over the course of the next week to update the configuration. It should only require making those settings optional, and creating the dockerode instance with the defaults to get it working.

@chrisregnier you can simply add another container like this: https://github.com/Tecnativa/docker-socket-proxy to proxy your socket to a host/port.
It even increases security by giving you the option to only allow what the node red node needs.

That's an interesting solution. And ya that definitely resolves other concerns I've had about giving direct root access to mounted systems.
