Hi, I'm a long-time Max user and wanted to share an unofficial port I've been maintaining: Max-Reborn.

The main changes from the original:

• Builds and runs on Apple Silicon (ARM64) under modern macOS
• Replaces the old PowerPC/Intel prebuilt frameworks with ARM64-compiled versions (libsndfile, FLAC, Vorbis, libmad, Musepack, WavPack, cdparanoia, etc.)
• Automated CI/CD via GitHub Actions with binary releases

Everything else is faithful to the original codebase — no feature changes. If there's ever interest in officially supporting Apple Silicon, I'm happy to contribute back whatever is useful.

I love the idea, cannot build, though (Xcode claims sndfile.h is not available, although it is located in /usr/local/include/sndfile.h). Can you please post a built package as a release? I will codesign it by myself.

Thanks for trying it out! The prebuilt frameworks use relative symlinks that only resolve with Homebrew installed. The CI workflow handles this automatically by installing libsndfile. I believe the build can be fixed by installing packages below first:

brew install libsndfile libcdio-paranoia musepack wavpack libcue mad flac libogg speex libvorbis lame taglib

Having said that, I've just published a prebuilt binary on the Releases page. It's ad-hoc signed, so after downloading you'll need to strip the quarantine attribute:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /path/to/Max.app

Then you can re-sign it with your own identity if you like. Let me know if it works!

OK, so I think we'll hijack this issue tracker and use it for your Apple Silicon version for now.
Here's how it looks on my side: once I downloaded, I was not able to drag/drop a .wav file (my usual workflow) onto the window. Quit MaxARM, (re)installed from brew using the command above. Granted, I lacked libcdio-paranoia, musepack, wavpack, libcue, mad and taglib.
Started MaxARM again, no change. Tried "File → Open" - all files in mp3, wav, mp4, formats are greyed out and can not be clicked. Surprisingly, the .flac files were clickable, however they wouldn't load, complaining about lacking a cue sheet. Out of the blue I decided to try configuring an output directory first, and then it just crashed on me:

Thanks for the report. I think there are two separate issues here.

File -> Open currently goes through Max’s older document-opening path, while File -> Convert Files uses the batch conversion/import path. So regular audio files like MP3/WAV are expected to work better in Convert Files right now, even though that is clearly confusing and not ideal UX.

The output-directory crash looks like a real bug. Could you share the exact repro steps?

For example:

fresh launch or after trying to open/convert files?
Preferences -> Output?
choose output directory or temporary directory?
crash when the picker opens, or after selecting a folder and clicking Open?
If you can give me the exact click-by-click sequence, I can narrow it down much faster.

Sure. In "File conversion" window click + to add an output path. MaxARM first asks for a zillion allowances to various folders (iCloud, files managed by other apps, Downloads, Documents, Music etc. - IMHO unnecessary) and then eventually crashes.

A bit of a mystery for me is why I was able (once!) to open an mp3 file and convert it (was real quick indeed) and then when I tried to do the same with another file, all sound files were greyed out and unselectable. No drag and drop to "File conversion" window possible either. Relaunching MaxARM does not help.
