issues with quarto files on Windows

I'm having trouble getting pkgdown::build_site() to run on Windows for packages with quarto content.

Here's a reprex, where I set up two GHA workflows:

• .github/workflows/pkgdown.ubuntu.yaml (runs-on: ubuntu-latest) succeeds
• .github/workflows/pkgdown.windows.yaml (runs-on: windows-latest) fails
• .github/workflows/R-CMD-check.yaml: windows-latest also fails, for what looks like the same reason

The two pkgdown workflows are mostly vanilla copies of https://github.com/r-lib/actions/blob/v2-branch/examples/pkgdown.yaml;
I think the only changes are:

• I renamed the workflows to specify ubuntu vs windows
• I removed the deploy step from the windows version (to avoid collisions)
• In the - uses: r-lib/actions/setup-r-dependencies@v2 step, I replaced extra-packages: any::pkgdown, local::. with extra-packages: r-lib/pkgdown, local::., any::quarto, to check whether the dev version of pkgdown might help and to make sure quarto-r got installed (not sure if quarto-r is even used in this workflow)

pkgdown::build_site() also fails on my local environment.

Thanks for any tips on how to solve!

This error is similar to #2844. Quarto is being installed by the action, but then the exectuable isn't found.

I did manage to fix the R CMD check error, which turned out to be from putting _quarto.yml in vignettes/articles/ instead of vignettes/

This is not. local::. is used to install the package. install = FALSE and new_process = FALSE is used in pkgdown::build_site_github_pages(new_process = FALSE, install = FALSE). So this is not a problem of the package not being found.

Any problem in rendering the quarto document would create an issue. quiet = FALSE is set on quarto_render() so there is no information on the issue. I think we need to find a way to surface the error in CI (especially for package and vignette rendering).

I am thinking of:

• force quiet = FALSE when CI is run in debug mode (https://docs.github.com/en/actions/monitoring-and-troubleshooting-workflows/troubleshooting-workflows/enabling-debug-logging)
• make quarto_render() log to a file that could be upload as artifact on CI when error.

I don't know what fits best for pkgdown. The latter is similar to testthat failure I think.

pkgdown::build_site() also fails on my local environment.

This is partly related to quarto-dev/quarto-r#217 and what I explained about install = TRUE vs install = FALSE.
