Revamping the Downloads Page

This issue tracks all the changes that need to happen to make #1277 ready to be pushed live.

This is not quite an exhaustive list, and more items can (and will!) be added in the future.

For now, the items are:

• Make the 'multi version' checkbox also work on submitting the form.
• Add a "I want to do everything from source checkbox", which will then show the old instructions
• Decide which frameworks should be present
• Decide which third party runners should be featured — these should be freely available
• Write instructions for each combination
  • Add instructions for Fedora clones, and Remi Repo
• Extend the instructions for not only installing PHP, but also with the web servers, which might need another drop down box.
• Move instructions that are currently linked (https://www.php.net/manual/install.unix.php and https://www.php.net/manual/install.macosx.php) from the manual to this mechanism
• Handle Windows binary installs, with perhaps links to XAMPP and friends.
• Write better logic and routing for all the different instruction possibilities (in downloads-get-instructions.php)
• Test it with JavaScript disabled

In any case: Adding Docker as a variant would make sense to me. The images are already available, similarly to Sury's Debian repository / Ubuntu PPA. ref: https://hub.docker.com/_/php/

While you're doing this, is there a downloads page that lists downloads? I see only instructions for installing the default PHP on Debian, which is 8.2 btw, and no source.

Not sure if this should be in a new issue, but some comments on the new downloads page:

• "OS default version" doesn't make sense for Windows - it should be hidden
• Where a third party package manager / repo is used, I think a link to the associated site should be displayed so people can easily find it to get support
• For Windows, a link to the Windows downloads page should always be shown - it's currently not obvious how to get there now (As far as I can tell you have to go: Source Tarballs from the sidebar or select "I want to compile everything")
• If "for web development" is selected, show link to the manual section(s) for webserver configuration and/or php-fpm (pool configuration)

Quick comment as XAMPP is mentioned in this task: XAMPP appears to be dead - it's not had a new release since PHP 8.2 and there have been no significant recent commits on their GitHub repos. More generally I think Windows recommendations should focus on WSL and/or Docker and stay away from 3rd party installer packs. See my comments and linked comments from others on php/doc-en#4720
