Setting Up Your Virtual Machine

Allocating Your Virtual Machine

  1. Log on to https://portal.azure.com/
  2. Click “+ New” in the upper left corner
  3. In the search box that opens, search for “Docker on Ubuntu Server”
  4. Click on “Docker on Ubuntu Server”
  5. The panel that opens on right should say “Docker on Ubuntu Server” at the top, a bunch of text in the middle, and a blue “Create” button at the bottom. Click on the “Create” button.
  6. In the “Create VM” panel that opens up, you will need to configure the following:
    Host Name
your choice of letters and number, just be sure you will remember, and don’t mind typing them a few times.

    Password

    Pricing Tier
I recommend selecting Standard D3 v2 (you will need to click “View all” to find this option). Be careful not to select one of the similar sounding options.
  7. Select Option Configuration Network, storage, diagnostics ->
  8. In the Panel that opens select Endpoints Configured and enter the following
    NAME

    TCP
    PUBLIC PORT
    8888
  9. After you have configured the above, click the blue “OK” and “Create” buttons.
  10. This can take several minutes, so you might want to do something while you wait.
  11. Once your virtual machine says “Running” you are ready to continue to the next step.

SSH to your Virtual Machine

  1. Click “Virtual machines (classic)” in the left sidebar
  2. Click on your VM in the list that opens.
  3. Note what it says under DNS name (this should be what you entered for “Host Name” with “.cloudapp.net” at the end.
  4. SSH to your virtual machine
    • Mac: open a terminal, then follow the Linux instructions
    • Linux: At the command line, type ssh USERNAME@DNS_name, then hit enter (where USERNAME is the user name you selected during VM configuration, and DNS_name is the DNS name from your Azure Dashboard. When you are prompted for the password, put in the password you selected during VM configuration.
    • Windows: Here are instructions for Putty, other clients will be similar. Hostname is the DNS_name is the DNS name from your Azure Dashboard, Username is the user name you selected during VM configuration, and password is the password you selected during VM configuration.
  5. If you logged in successfully, you should be presented with a “command prompt” that looks something like this (with your username and hostname instead):
