Startpage and first start

Please note that: in recent months it happens that for every first start of Firefox and first search Startpage, the previews on the page do not appear, you have to reload the page every first time, this only with Startpage. It was not communicated before because, it was hoped it would not happen again after an update.

So, I've been looking into this issue, but I can't reproduce it.
How exactly are you performing the search?
Could you describe exact steps that leads to opening Startpage.com and making the search?

For example, I've tried to open Firefox, and visit https://www.startpage.com/sp/search?q=matrix and the search result page was shown and previews were correctly visible.

• With browser closed
• Browser launch
• Browser auto-load start page: https://www.startpage.com
• Search input (example: pizza) enter
• Browser auto-load result list page, but previews does not appear
• If you press the icon to reload the page
• After the page has been reloaded, the previews appear
• In subsequent searches or if you do not close the browser the inconvenience does not reappear

This always happens at the first search when starting from a closed browser and only with Startpage.

I see, I would guess, Firefox loads the page faster than the extension, and after registering content script for the startpage on start, it's too late, because it's already loaded. At lest this is the only reason I can think of...

But I've actually changed how the scripts are loaded in the last version 4.8 (released only this Saturday), and now they should persist across restart. So there is a good chance it will work now.
I've tested it on my Firefox ESR and it seems to work fine even if I set startpage as homepage.

and in addition sometimes it is not enough to reload the page, the previews do not appear
as it happens sometimes that the previews come out but a instant later they disappear and you have to reload the page.

I assume you understand why
I also suppose that part of the problem is the fast loading of the search.

I add that I further suspect it is also (as an additional cause) for the possible auto-redirection to "secondary search addresses" of Startpage that starts (as a hypothesized example) from: https://www.startpage.com/
but which could then automatically become in search: https://eu.startpage.com/ or: https://us.startpage.com/
and things like that.

Wait, if the thumbnails are visible for a moment, then problem is somewhere else. Any chance you are using some extension that can interact with the search results?

Also, if you are redirected to eu/us subdomain, that will also break it, since my extension doesn't run on those. But I should be able to fix that.

It's something that happens lately with version 4.8
this didn't happen before, it's a recent thing.

Started the search, there are no previews, after a moment they appear, after another moment they disappear,
reloading the page they reappear and remain.
It's an inconvenience that happens only with the first start from a closed browser and the first search,
then it doesn't appear again until the browser is completely closed and reopened again with a new first search,
this only with Startpage search.

Update on the issue

I recently reopened the browser (2 minutes ago) from completely closed
and currently the Startpage search page when it opens "has a slight flickering in the results (this only in the first search)" but the previews finally reappear immediately,
to be safe i tried again a few times and it seems to be working fine :)

Reopened for the first time today (2 minutes ago) the browser does the same as before, that is, the preview comes out, then disappears, if you reload previews reappears, (all tried several times), patience, better this than no preview at all

Startpage is not showing search previews for me either (Vivaldi Browser 7.4.3684.50, stable channel, 64-bit).

Example: clicking on https://www.startpage.com/do/search?q=startpage.com only shows this:

@ccrowles just to clarify, further searches on the startpage works OK, right?
It's only the very first load that fails, correct?
(if not, click the toolbar icon to verify you have Search Result Previews enabled for startpage.com domain)

... well, I didn't have my morning coffee and it shows. I indeed forgot to enable it for Startpage. Now it works as it should. Sorry for the bother!
