Code of conduct

Online communities include people from many different backgrounds. The Cipher Host team and our contributors are committed to providing a friendly, safe, welcoming, and privacy-respecting environment for all.

Our code of conduct aims to:

  1. Establish baseline standards for respectful community interaction.
  2. Provide clear conflict resolution mechanisms.
  3. Foster an inclusive environment welcoming to all backgrounds.
  4. Protect privacy and security of community members.

We believe that healthy debate and disagreement are essential to a healthy project and community. However, it is never ok to be disrespectful. We value diverse opinions, but we value respectful behavior more.

TL;DR

  • Treat everyone with respect and kindness.
  • Be thoughtful in how you communicate.
  • Do not be destructive or inflammatory.
  • Protect community privacy and security.
  • Report issues to conduct@cipher.host.

Our pledge

We as members, contributors, and leaders pledge to make participation in our community a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of age, body size, visible or invisible disability, ethnicity, sex characteristics, gender identity and expression, level of experience, education, socio-economic status, nationality, personal appearance, race, caste, color, religion, or sexual identity and orientation.

We pledge to act and interact in ways that contribute to an open, welcoming, diverse, inclusive, and healthy community, while maintaining high standards for privacy and security.

Our standards

Examples of behavior that contributes to a positive environment:

  • Demonstrating empathy and kindness toward others.
  • Respecting differing opinions and experiences.
  • Giving and gracefully accepting constructive feedback.
  • Prioritizing community privacy and confidentiality.
  • Securely handling sensitive information.
  • Acknowledging and correcting mistakes.
  • Respecting anonymity preferences.
  • Focusing on what benefits the overall community, not just individuals.
  • Operating with a communal mindset.

Examples of unacceptable behavior:

  • Public or private harassment.
  • Publishing others' private information without permission ("doxxing").
  • Inappropriate sharing of project/user data.
  • Sexual harassment or unwelcome attention.
  • Making unsubstantiated claims about security or privacy issues.
  • Aggressive networking or data harvesting.
  • Circumventing privacy protections.
  • Other conduct inappropriate for a professional setting.

Privacy-specific commitments

Given our product's focus on digital rights protection, we additionally require:

  1. Confidentiality: Keep private all non-public information gained through community participation.
  2. Data minimization: Collect only essential personal data for community operations.
  3. Secure communications: Use project-approved encrypted channels for sensitive discussions.
  4. Responsible disclosure: Report security issues through [SECURITY.md] channels.
  5. Data retention: Limit personal data storage to a minimum for standard reports and delete after the issue is resolved.

Enforcement responsibilities

Project maintainers are responsible for clarifying and enforcing our standards. They will:

  • Remove, edit, or reject inappropriate content.
  • Temporarily or permanently ban contributors for harmful behavior.
  • Maintain reporter/victim confidentiality.
  • Complete GDPR-compliant recordkeeping.
  • Protect reporter anonymity.
  • Secure sensitive information.

Scope

This code of conduct applies within all community spaces, and also applies when an individual is officially representing the community in public spaces.

Examples of representing our community include using an official email address, posting via an official social media account, or acting as an appointed representative at an online or offline event.

Reporting, enforcement, and resolution

We do not believe that all conflict is bad; healthy debate and disagreement often yield positive results. However, it is never okay to be disrespectful or to engage in behavior that violates this code of conduct.

If you see someone violating the code of conduct, you are encouraged to address the behavior directly with those involved first. Many issues can be resolved quickly and easily, and this gives people more control over the outcome of their dispute. If you are unable to resolve the matter for any reason, or if the behavior is threatening or harassing, report it.

Violations may be reported to conduct@cipher.host.

All complaints will be reviewed and investigated promptly and fairly. Retaliation against reporters will not be tolerated.

While we will investigate every complaint, you may not receive a direct response. We will use our discretion in determining when and how to follow up on reported incidents, which may range from not taking action to permanent expulsion from our projects and community.

We will notify the accused of the report and provide them an opportunity to discuss it before any action is taken. The identity of the reporter will be omitted from the details of the report supplied to the accused. In potentially harmful situations, such as ongoing harassment or threats to anyone’s safety, we may take action without notice.
