Package has similar problem as aur/pixelorama. Downloads 1.1GB of templates, discarding all by ~70MB. Commented on aurweb to recommend using extra/godot as runtime.

I am the requester and the maintainer on the aur. I simply thought having a version in the chaotic-aur would be nice.

I dont really want godot to be installed, because i dont want to manage my installed versions via pacman/yay, but via godots.

A switch to godots-bin, like it was done for pixelorama could be done, but it doesnt looks like the maintainer of godots really wants to work on godots anymore, so the bin version is out of date with main.

We could just wait MakovWait/godots#104 for reduced export templates, but that prolly would take some time, or i would need to fork godots.

Are you a chaotic-aur user? chaotic-aur/pixelorama is a custom package that uses extra/godot as runtime.

Using extra/godot as runtime for godots would result in only the single instance being installed via pacman. All others could be managed with godots.

You could also use godot-export-templates-git, but I would prefer extra/godots.

Using prebuilt binaries (godot templates, minimized or not) is not ideal for source-built packages, and arguably against package guidelines.

I just took over the package from being abandoned cause i saw an usecase, and changed some minimal things to build against godot 4.4. and fix an error that came from godots's assumption unzip would be installed.

Reading over the package guidelines, it feels like a very java situation.
The general recommendation for godot things goes towards using the version that got used with the application, cause godot doesnt use proper semantic versioning, (4.4 brings big enough breaking changes compared to 4.3), but arch or the aur dont have godot43 godot42 godot 41 godot40 etc. for the differrent godot versions.

I am willing to use godot-export-templates-git, cause my preference really goes to avoid using extra/godot in the case of godots specifically.

Runtimes are usually expected to be packaged separately. Godot seems to make assumptions that don't necessarily work well for packaging.

I did some testing, and godot-export-templates-git doesn't seem to work with extra/godot. I created a new package aur/godot-export-templates-linux.

Here are some code snippets to use it. Not fully tested.

I'm working on godot-export-templates-bin that will have linux, windows, apple, web, android subpackages.

godot-export-templates-linux worked out and that change is pushed to the aur

@novadragonDOTspace In case you're interested, added you as comaintainer of the new export templates packages. Shouldn't require much effort as long as godot doesn't change the templates location.

I didn't realize before that export template could be set in export_presets.cfg. Could be worth switching back to that method in future to avoid copying files around.

One more change would be appreciated. Make pkgver use only stable tags and remove the stable string from the version. Following would produce 1.3.r38.gdbb263b:
