Once a tag exist it should be packaged up so that people can download and use Walnut without having access to a Java compiler

For future distribution, JPMS / jlink may be the technology to go. It allows you to build platform specific installers with a preconfigured JDK, folder structure, etc. Essentially, you just extract a Walnut .zip and click run.

It may requiring some configuration since not all Walnut dependencies support JPMS, but there aren't that many dependencies either.

This probably integrates nicely with docker images as well, in case you want to host a web environment.
