We have become aware of a phishing scam in which individuals impersonate Prof. Kate Saenko to offer fake research internship or job positions. These fraudulent messages are not sent by Prof. Saenko or anyone affiliated with her research group.

How to Identify the Scam

The email may appear to come from Prof. Saenko but uses an address that is not an official
@bu.edu
address (e.g., a Gmail, Yahoo, or other free email account).

The message offers a research internship, assistantship, or job opportunity and may ask you to reply urgently.

You may be asked to provide personal information, pay fees, purchase equipment, or cash checks.

The writing style, grammar, or formatting may seem unusual or inconsistent with professional academic communication.

What You Should Do

Do not reply to the suspicious email.

Do not click any links or open any attachments in the message.

Do not send money, gift cards, or personal information.

If you have already responded or shared personal information, contact your institution's IT security office immediately.

How to Report Phishing

Boston University community: Forward the suspicious email to abuse@bu.edu. See BU's phishing information page for more details.

Gmail users: Use the "Report phishing" option in the three-dot menu of the email.

Other email providers: Check your provider's documentation on how to report phishing or spam.

U.S. residents: Report the scam to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) or the FTC.

Legitimate Contact

All official communications from Prof. Saenko will come from her @bu.edu email address. If you are unsure whether a message is legitimate, you can verify by contacting Prof. Saenko through her official contact page.
