## Hackaton = Hacking + Marathon {#hacking}
Many competitions are run as [hackathons](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hackathon), an event where participants rapidly prototype solutions to given problems. *Hackathon* is portmanteau of *hacking* + *marathon*, reflecting the intensity of development over a set period of time, such as a day or weekend.
