Thank you for reporting this issue! We've confirmed the problem and submitted a fix.

The issue where using an invalid model specification showed a confusing authentication error has been addressed. Instead of the misleading message, users will now see a clear error indicating that the provider is not recognized.

The fix is now under review: CortexLM/cortex-cli#118
