Thank you for reporting this issue! We've confirmed the problem and submitted a fix.

The issue you described - where cortex wasn't respecting the XDG_CONFIG_HOME environment variable and always used ~/.cortex - has been addressed.

A fix is now under review: CortexLM/cortex-cli#144

Once the fix is merged and released, setting XDG_CONFIG_HOME (or other XDG variables like XDG_DATA_HOME and XDG_CACHE_HOME) will correctly store cortex configuration, data, and cache files in your preferred locations, as expected by the XDG Base Directory Specification.
