Is it feasible to run (parts of) KLayout in the browser using WebAssembly (WASM / Emscripten)?

I'm very interested in whether it's possible (or has anyone tried) to bring KLayout (or significant parts of it) to run directly inside a web browser using WebAssembly.

I have not tried WebAssembly, maybe someone else has.

Have tried. It's not impossible but pyodide couldn't compile some dependencies (forgot exactly what it was).

You can go the direct route of e.g. using rust bindings on top of C++ which likely gets you further, but then you need to do your own bindings and afaik @klayoutmatthias does not give any guarantees for stability of the interfaces of the C++ bindings whereas the python/ruby bindings have been very stable. Also, if you go the rust route, your result will need to be GPL like klayout. If you go the pyodide route, the klayout module would be, but not any other modules using it
