GUM: Spheno index error causes ocassional Farray error: Array index out of bounds error

This was found when running the IDM Sarah model through GUM.

Claude detected this and suggested a fix (shown in branch gum_spheno_index_bug). However, before making this a PR, we should try to understand more why this happens, and whether this fix will work in general.
