Hello, having valuable software out there without a license or copyright is not advisable. There is history (not in DUNE) of people claiming ownership of shared code and preventing the original group from using it.
DUNE recommends the following
https://docs.dunescience.org/cgi-bin/sso/ShowDocument?docid=27141
"1. Code developers should consider signing over copyright to Fermilab and assert the
Apache License, Version 2.0 http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0.
This follows the path chosen by the LArSoft organization. https://github.com/
LArSoft/larsoft/blob/develop/LICENSE
- Assignment of copyrights for code to individuals instead of organizations is strongly
discouraged as organizations provide continuity, have greater resources for legal
defense of copyright, and allow for future changes in license if that were needed."
Another institution is fine for copyright - say RAL or IN2P3 - but it needs to be some entity that can defend the intellectual property.
