Challenge 1: Find Your Way Around

Source template: challenge-01-find-your-way.yml

Chapters: Ch02: Understanding GitHub | Ch03: Navigating Repositories | Ch04: The Learning Room

What you will do: Explore this learning-room repository like a scavenger hunt. You will navigate tabs, the file tree, read key files, and find landmarks.

Step-by-step scavenger hunt

Task 1: Count files in the root

  1. Make sure you are on the Code tab (click it at the top)
  2. Look at the file/folder list
  3. Count how many items are showing (stop before the first folder)
  4. Write down this number

Task 2: Find an open issue

  1. Click the Issues tab
  2. Look for issues with a green Open label
  3. Click on one to read it
  4. Write down its title

Task 3: Read welcome.md

  1. Click the Code tab
  2. Look for a folder named docs/
  3. Click to open it
  4. Find welcome.md and click it
  5. Read the first paragraph (the opening sentence)
  6. Write down what it says

Task 4: Find the repo description

  1. Go to the Code tab
  2. Look at the top-right area - you should see a text description under the repo name
  3. This is the "About" section
  4. Write down what it says

Task 5: Read the README

  1. On the Code tab, scroll down to find README.md
  2. Click it to open
  3. Find the section that says "Who this workshop is for"
  4. Write down the answer

Task 6: Check the About section

  1. On the Code tab, look at the right sidebar
  2. You should see a section labeled "About" with repo information
  3. Write down what you see there

Challenge 2: File Your First Issue

Chapter: Ch05: Working with Issues

What you will do: Find a TODO comment in docs/welcome.md, then file an issue describing the problem with a clear title and description.

Instructions

  1. Open docs/welcome.md and look for a line that contains TODO -- this marks something that needs fixing.
  2. Go to the Issues tab and select New issue.
  3. Write a clear, descriptive title (not just "Fix TODO").
  4. In the description, use this required format: - What: what needs to change - Where: where the problem is (must include docs/welcome.md) - Why: why the change matters - Mention the exact TODO text you found

Challenge 3: Join the Conversation

Chapter: Ch05: Working with Issues

What you will do: Practice GitHub's collaboration features by commenting on a peer-simulation issue, using @mentions, and adding reactions.

Instructions

  1. Open the Peer Simulation: Welcome Link Needs Context issue in this repository. If your facilitator gave you access to a real buddy repository, you may use your buddy's Challenge 2 issue instead.
  2. Leave a meaningful comment on their issue. Ideas:
    • Confirm you can reproduce the problem they described
    • Suggest an approach to fix it
    • Ask a clarifying question
  3. Use an @mention in your comment. For the simulation, mention @gandalf-bot. For a real buddy repository, mention your buddy's username.
  4. Add a reaction to the original issue.

Good commenting tips

  • Be specific ("I found the same TODO on line 12" is better than "I agree")
  • Be encouraging ("Great find!" is always welcome)
  • Be constructive (suggest, do not just criticize)

Challenge 4: Branch Out

Chapter: Ch06: Working with Pull Requests

What you will do: Create a personal branch named learn/YOUR-USERNAME where you will make your Day 1 changes.

Instructions

  1. Make sure you are on the Code tab of the learning-room repository.
  2. Find the branch dropdown (it shows "main" by default).
  3. Type learn/YOUR-USERNAME (replace YOUR-USERNAME with your actual GitHub username).
  4. Select Create branch: learn/YOUR-USERNAME from main.

Branch naming convention

Your branch name must follow this pattern: learn/ followed by your GitHub username. Examples:

  • learn/octocat
  • learn/mona-lisa
  • learn/student42

This naming convention helps facilitators and automation identify your work.

Challenge 5: Make Your Mark

Chapter: Ch06: Working with Pull Requests

What you will do: Edit docs/welcome.md on your branch to fix the TODO you found in Challenge 2, then commit with a meaningful message.

Instructions

  1. Make sure you are on your learn/YOUR-USERNAME branch (check the branch dropdown).
  2. Navigate to docs/welcome.md.
  3. Select the pencil icon (Edit this file) to open the editor.
  4. Find the TODO and replace it with real content.
  5. Write a meaningful commit message that explains what you changed and why.
  6. Commit directly to your branch.

What makes a good commit message?

Challenge 6: Open Your First Pull Request

Chapter: Ch06: Working with Pull Requests

What you will do: Open a pull request from your learn/YOUR-USERNAME branch to main, connecting it to the issue you filed in Challenge 2.

Instructions

  1. Go to the Pull requests tab.
  2. Select New pull request.
  3. Set base to main and compare to learn/YOUR-USERNAME.
  4. Write a descriptive PR title.
  5. In the PR description, include Closes #XX (replace XX with your Challenge 2 issue number). This automatically links and closes the issue when the PR is merged.
  6. Submit the pull request.

Use this structure for your PR description:

#### The magic of `Closes #XX`

When you write `Closes #12` in a PR description, GitHub automatically:
- Links the PR to issue #12
- Closes issue #12 when the PR is merged

This is one of GitHub's most powerful workflow features.

Challenge 7: Survive a Merge Conflict

Source template: challenge-07-merge-conflict.yml

Chapter: Ch07: Merge Conflicts

What you will do: Your facilitator will intentionally trigger a merge conflict in your PR. You will resolve it by identifying conflict markers, choosing the right content, and cleaning up the markers.

Why this matters: Merge conflicts happen in real teamwork. Learning to resolve them calmly is a key professional skill.

Understanding conflict markers

When Git cannot automatically merge code, it marks the problem with special markers:

Your version from your branch
>>>>>>> learn/your-username

**Your job:** Decide which version is right (or combine them), then **DELETE all three marker lines** (the `<<<<<<<`, `=======`, `>>>>>>>` lines). The final file should have NO markers and have actual, meaningful code.

#### Step-by-step resolution

#### Step 1: Look at your PR
1. Go to your **Pull requests** tab
2. Click on your PR
3. You should see a message: "Can't automatically merge" or "This branch has conflicts..."
4. Look for a button: **Resolve conflicts** (or "Resolve")
5. Click it

#### Step 2: Find the conflict markers
1. GitHub will show the file with conflict markers highlighted
2. Look for lines starting with `<<<<<<<`, `=======`, `>>>>>>>`
3. Read both versions carefully

#### Step 3: Choose your version
You have three options:
- Keep the **main branch** version (delete everything from `<<<<<<<` to `=======` inclusive, keep `=======` to `>>>>>>>`)
- Keep **your branch** version (keep `<<<<<<<` to `=======` exclusive, delete `=======` to `>>>>>>>`)
- **Combine both** (keep parts of both, delete all marker lines)
- Ask your facilitator which is correct

#### Step 4: Clean up
1. Delete the marker lines: `<<<<<<<`, `=======`, `>>>>>>>`
2. The final file should have NO conflict markers
3. The final file should have meaningful, correct code

#### Step 5: Mark as resolved
1. At the bottom, click **Mark as resolved**
2. Commit the resolution
3. Your PR should now be mergeable

**Autograded:** The autograder will check that no conflict markers remain in your file and that the file has meaningful content.

Challenge 8: The Culture Layer

Chapter: Ch08: Open Source Culture

What you will do: Reflect on what makes open source welcoming, then practice triaging an issue by adding descriptive labels.

Why this matters: Open source is about people, not just code. Labels help teams organize work and signal what needs attention.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Reflect on community

Think about your workshop experience today and answer 2-3 of these questions (write 1-2 sentences for each):

  • What made you feel welcome or supported today?
  • What moment taught you something new?
  • What would make this community more inclusive?
  • How did a peer help you or learn from you?

Step 2: Find an issue to triage

  1. Click the Issues tab
  2. Look for the Peer Simulation: Welcome Link Needs Context issue (or a real classmate's issue if you have buddy access)
  3. Click to open it

Step 3: Add a label

  1. In the issue, look on the right side for a section labeled Labels
  2. Click in that section
  3. You will see a dropdown menu of available labels
  4. Choose ONE label that describes this issue:
    • bug -- something is broken or not working
    • enhancement -- a suggestion for improvement
    • documentation -- about docs, help, or guidance
    • good first issue -- suitable for newcomers
    • question -- asking for clarification
  5. Click the label to apply it
  6. The label will appear in the issue

Step 4: Leave a comment (optional)

  1. Scroll down to the comment box
  2. Type a short message about why you chose that label:
   I added the "documentation" label because this issue helps new contributors understand the welcome section.

Challenge 9: Merge Day

Source template: challenge-09-merge-day.yml

Chapter: Ch10: Notifications and Day 1 Close

What you will do: Get your Day 1 PR merged, verify your changes on main, and celebrate completing all Day 1 challenges.

Why this matters: Merging is how work gets integrated. This is the payoff for all your effort today.

Pre-merge checklist

Before clicking merge, make sure:

  • ✅ Your PR has no conflict markers or merge conflicts (if it does, go back to Challenge 7)
  • ✅ Your PR description includes Closes #XX linking to your Challenge 2 issue
  • ✅ Your commit message is meaningful (describes what you changed)
  • ✅ You have reviewed your changes one last time

Step-by-step merge

Step 1: Open your PR

  1. Click the Pull requests tab
  2. Find your PR (the one you created in Challenge 6)
  3. Click it to open

Step 2: Check the merge button

  1. Look at the top of the PR
  2. You should see a button labeled Merge pull request in green
  3. If the button is gray and disabled, your facilitator may need to approve it or resolve conflicts first
  4. Ask your facilitator if needed

Step 3: Click to merge

  1. Click the green Merge pull request button
  2. A dropdown may appear with merge strategy options - just click Merge
  3. You may see a confirmation message asking if you're sure - click Confirm merge
  4. GitHub will show "Pull request successfully merged"

Step 4: Verify your changes are on main

  1. Click the Code tab
  2. Make sure the branch dropdown shows main
  3. Navigate to docs/welcome.md
  4. You should see your new welcome text (not the TODO)
  5. This confirms your change is now on the main branch for everyone to see

Step 5: Check that your issue was closed

  1. Click the Issues tab
  2. Look at the issue you filed in Challenge 2
  3. It should show Closed (because your PR said Closes #XX)
  4. This automation keeps issues and PRs connected

  • Navigated a real GitHub repository
  • Filed an issue with clear, structured content
  • Collaborated through comments and @mentions
  • Created a feature branch safely

Challenge 10: Go Local

Chapters: Ch11: VS Code Interface | Ch13: How Git Works | Ch14: Git in Practice

What you will do: Clone the sci-fi themes repo to your computer, create a feature branch, make an edit to the README.md file, commit locally, and push to GitHub.

The local workflow

This is the professional Git workflow you will use for the rest of your career:

  1. Clone the repository to your computer
  2. Branch -- create a new branch for your work
  3. Edit -- make your changes in your local editor
  4. Commit -- save a snapshot locally with a message
  5. Push -- send your branch to GitHub

Choose your tool and follow the steps

Option A: VS Code (recommended for Day 2)

Step 1: Clone the repository

  1. Open VS Code
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+P (or Cmd+Shift+P on Mac) to open the Command Palette
  3. Type Git: Clone
  4. Paste this repository URL: https://github.com/Community-Access/vscode-sci-fi-themes.git
  5. Choose a folder on your computer where you want to save it
  6. Wait for it to clone (you should see it in the file explorer)

Step 2: Create your feature branch

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+P again
  2. Type Git: Create Branch
  3. Name it: fix/YOUR-USERNAME (replace YOUR-USERNAME with your username)
  4. Press Enter

Step 3: Edit a file

  1. In the explorer on the left, open README.md
  2. Add a comment, fix a typo, or improve a sentence (just 1-2 lines)

Step 4: Commit your change

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+G to open the Source Control panel
  2. You will see your modified file listed
  3. Select the + next to it to Stage the change
  4. In the message field at the top, write a commit message:
    docs: improve README wording

5. Press Ctrl+Enter (or select the checkmark) to **Commit**

#### Step 5: Push to GitHub
1. Press Ctrl+Shift+P again
2. Type `Git: Push`
3. You may see a prompt asking about "set upstream" - select **OK**
4. Wait for the push to complete

#### Option B: GitHub Desktop

#### Step 1: Clone the repository
1. Open GitHub Desktop
2. Choose File > Clone Repository
3. Paste the URL: `https://github.com/Community-Access/vscode-sci-fi-themes.git`
4. Choose a folder location
5. Select Clone

#### Step 2: Create your feature branch
1. Open the **Branch** menu at the top
2. Select **New Branch**
3. Name it: `fix/YOUR-USERNAME`
4. Make sure "main" is selected as the base
5. Select **Create Branch**

#### Step 3: Edit a file
1. Select **Show in Explorer** to open the folder
2. Open `README.md`
3. Add a comment, fix a typo, or improve a sentence

#### Step 4: Commit your change
1. Go back to GitHub Desktop
2. You should see your change listed
3. At the bottom-left, write a commit message: `docs: improve README wording`
4. Select **Commit to fix/YOUR-USERNAME**

#### Step 5: Push to GitHub
1. Select the **Publish branch** button (or **Push** if it's already published)
2. Wait for the push to complete

Challenge 11: Open a Day 2 PR

Chapters: Ch14: Git in Practice | Ch15: Code Review

What you will do: Open a pull request from the branch you pushed locally in Challenge 10. The workflow is identical to Day 1 — only the source of the commits changed.

The workflow pattern

Notice the parallel:

  • Day 1: Edit on GitHub.com → commit → open PR on GitHub
  • Day 2: Edit locally → commit locally → push to GitHub → open PR

The PR creation step is the same. Git just moves you between locations.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Check for a notification banner

  1. Go to the sci-fi themes repository on GitHub.com
  2. You may see a notification banner at the top saying "Your branch had recent pushes"
  3. If so, select Compare & pull request - this is a shortcut
  4. Skip to Step 3

Step 2: Or create PR manually

  1. Select the Pull requests tab
  2. Select New pull request
  3. Set base to main
  4. Set compare to fix/YOUR-USERNAME (your Day 2 branch)
  5. Select Create pull request

Step 3: Write your PR title

Write a clear, specific title about what you changed:

docs: improve README wording

Instructions

Using GitHub Desktop:

  1. Open the learning-room repository in GitHub Desktop.
  2. Go to the History tab.
  3. Explore the commit timeline. Notice:
    • How branches appear as parallel lines
    • Where merges bring lines back together
    • Which commits are yours vs seeded peer-simulation commits

Using GitHub.com (alternative):

  1. Go to the learning-room repository on GitHub.com.
  2. Select Insights > Network to see the branch graph.
  3. Or select Commits on the Code tab to see the linear history.

What to observe

Answer these questions as you explore:

  • How many branches exist in the repository right now?
  • Can you find your Challenge 5 commit in the history?
  • Where does your learn/YOUR-USERNAME branch diverge from main?
  • Can you find the merge commit from your Challenge 9 PR?
  • What is the oldest commit in the repository?
