Unable to connect to Wi-Fi

The firmware flashes reliably, it scans for networks and finds my Wi-Fi network but gets stuck "Trying to connect".
I've reset and re-flashed a couple of times.
Is there a way to set the wifi credentials via the console?
Any tips most welcome.

Ok, I've now read the README duh.
I've set ssid and wifi_password but I'm not seeing an IP address and the public_ip command fails.

I'm stuck. I installed the ESP Web Tools and that works. Connects and spits out the IP address etc. Re-installed rig control and it gives me an Unknown Error (1) every time I try to connect.

Yes, I am rewriting the flashhing software to initialize the connection in a different way. Sorry I have been delayed on this project. I had a heart attack, bypass surgery, and a flood of my hamshack! Actually, I wrote a short progress report here.

Unfortunately I'm stuck in the hospital for a little while. I'll be okay, just got to tune up my meds. The configuration after flashing does seem pretty buggy and I'm going to replace the protocol which I got from someone else. Thanks Bruce
