Azure Container Linux (ACL) is the long‑term, immutable, container‑optimized Linux operating system for Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS). It provides a secure, minimal, and operationally consistent host OS designed specifically for running Kubernetes workloads at scale.
ACL is derived from the Flatcar Container Linux project, building on Flatcar’s proven, container‑first immutable design while adding Azure Linux packages, servicing, and deep integration with the Azure and AKS lifecycle. This model allows ACL to stay closely aligned with upstream Flatcar innovation while meeting Azure’s production, security, and compliance requirements.
ACL is expected to GA in June.
