How to use CharCryptoExample

I'm trying to figure out how your website "https://ldcharcrypto.ags131.com/" works. I understand that it works off of your charCryptoExample.js in your samples folder. However I'm having difficulty deciphering your CharCrypto class, how the bit shifting works and all. Towards the end of creating my own personal app that emulates the same.

I've been trying to use Node.js with npm in line commands and have trouble building your project. Attached is the most recent console log from my attempt at using "npm-install". Thank you for all your work and consideration.

I'm working on the same thing. Have you made any progress?

I was able to install it by doing npm install, then I needed to install gulp cli, and ran gulp after that. From there, I was able to at least run "node .\samples\charCryptoExample.js" and it spat out something... but I'm not sure how to pass it the character ID plus the UID for the tag.

In fairness, I don't think these struggles are you own fault. I gave it a go and ran into similar problems. I think the crux of it is that we're all likely running newer version of Node than this was last developed against and things have changed, especially around binary modules. There are a lot of outdated versions of packages as well. This has version 2.x of serialport and they're up to 9.x!

In an effort to unblock you, I made some very barebones changes, but enough to get the example to run. I've pushed my changes to a fork (https://github.com/bettse/node-ld). If you clone that and run npm install (gulp will run automatically when the install is finished), you should be able to run the example. At least it worked for me with node v16.2.0.

This is where I leave you. The example has good variable and function names, and someone who knows javascript and is familiar with the memory layout of the figures should be able to figure out how to provide the uid and id, or re-create the ldcarcrypto tool.

I kept digging after I made that comment and got it to work.
For any future readers seeking help:

• running the /sample/character.js got me what I needed, outputting the same results as the ldcharcrypto website
• it didn't like the relative path for the charactermap.json, so I just hard coded the full path and it ran fine. From there, the script runs normally and it works as expected, outputting the results for each character.

However, I seem to have an old version of node installed (10.15.3) so that could have been why I had less difficulty.
